Become a Receptionist

Judy - one of our Receptionists writes:

"Since relocating to River Walk the CAB has the benefit of a reception area. This is a comfortable and roomy place for clients to wait and is certainly an improvement on the facilities at the old premises."

"As the first point of contact for clients the receptionist has an important role at the CAB. The first hour of the day is usually spent dealing with clients and giving them an idea of how long they can expect to wait to see an adviser. I explain our system, which is to refer them to the Supervisor to assess their enquiry and who then books them in to see an adviser at a specific time. They are usually seen the same day.Working closely with the supervisor we keep the clients moving, thereby avoiding long waits in the reception area."

"My other responsibilities include keeping the area clean and tidy and to allocate interview rooms appropriately, taking into account the number of people and any special needs. You need to be friendly and efficient on the front desk and keep people informed of any delays etc. I feel it is important to put clients at ease as some may be going through a very stressful time. Most people appreciate a friendly face and a chat about the weather."

"I am a volunteer, fairly new to the service. I find it rewarding and previous work experience has been useful in dealing with the general public. Although to some the receptionists' role may seem undemanding, it can certainly have its moments. The secret is to be organised, calm and cheerful."
